How to Lower Ping

  • Have your player(s) with high latency visit http://ping.gl.ply.gg and see which datacenter they are getting routed to. If the datacenter is far from you and the player, consider using a regional tunnel with Playit Premium.
  • If you are hosting a server using WiFi, try moving to a wired connection.
  • Restart your router. Sometimes the router gets into a bad state and buffer bloat becomes a big issue.
  • If you are hosting Minecraft, try lowering view-distance. See Fixing Timeout Errors.
  • Update your server software to the latest version.
  • Disable IPv6 if you are not using it. See YouTube tutorial.
  • Use a wired (ethernet) connection instead of WiFi.
  • If running Paper, update to the latest version at papermc.io.
  • Change and flush your DNS. See Changing DNS.
  • Update your network drivers.
  • Whitelist SquidServers and Minecraft in your firewall and antivirus software.
  • Close any bandwidth-hungry applications running in the background (streaming, large downloads, cloud sync).

Your ping depends on:

  1. The distance between players and your server location.
  2. The quality and stability of the internet connection.
  3. The number of players and how much data the server needs to process.
  4. Network congestion along the route.
  5. Your router configuration and local network quality.
